The smaller more high tech devices exist and are usually used in spy operations.
Most undercover agents trying to make cases for drug crimes simply use their cell phone to record the conversations and/or transmit them to whatever number he dialed before the meeting. This is a very practical idea and is used a lot.
Undercover agents also have transmitters/recording devices that look like: wrist watches, ball caps, pagers, pens, and memory sticks. You can detect these bugs on a person’s body with devices that search for RF signals. However, you can get a
false positive from electronics, florescent lighting, and some other things. To make sure you are not monitored, make a metal box by lining a large cigar box with copper. This will require soldering the corners so that the copper on all six sides
of the box touch when the box is closed. Attach it to a cord that runs to the ground pin of an electrical plug. This box will ground 99-percent of the transmitters provided the ground for the circuit is an earth ground. Also, buy a cell phone
jammer.
Once the person places his cell phone, watch, wallet in the box, use the bug detection device or RF probe to sweep the person for transmitters. If I found nothing I would then activate the cell phone jammer and start the meeting.
Remember: changing the meeting location at the last minuet is a good way to throw them off. If they go along with it, then they can not have wired mics and cameras set up. If anything, they would have RF transmitting equipment on them.
