A dog's olfactory system is far more advanced than that of a human.
Where we have about five million receptors, dogs have over 200 million. The nasal passages of most dogs are far more advanced than ours. Where we have the equivalent of a toilet paper tube, dogs have the equivalent of the Holland Tunnel.
This, coupled with the dog's brain's much larger olfactory sector means that they are very close to being able to smell at the molecular level i.e. they need very little to work with.
It is close to impossible to hide anything from a Labrador Retriever, the same breed of dog many departments use for drug, arson, and bomb detection. He may be dumber than a bag of hammers, but he can find anything he really sets his mind to finding. Bury toys. Toss them up on the roof. Do everything short of burning them, and he can find them. It's absolutely amazing.
