The best way to dehydrate urine for use in powdered form on a commercial scale (up to 2
liters/batch) is to purchase a Rotary Evaporator (Rotovap). To see an explanation of how
this works go to http://www.wfu.edu/academics/chemistry/ … otovap.htm
The evaporation uses low pressure (vacuum) to reduce the boiling point of the liquid so
that much less heat is required, depending on the amount of vacuum and time that you are
willing to wait water can be removed at the rate of ~1 liter/hour at a temperature slightly
over room temperature (faster with elevated temperatures). These machines (used) will
cost on the order of $200->1000 depending on the model and where you buy it from (new
systems will be >$3000). Buchi makes a standard model that you may be able to bid on
from an outfit which sells used lab equipment such as http://www.labx.com (look under the
category evaporators)."
