Does a statement from an apartment maintenance crew give cops probable cause to enter my unit without a warrant or my written or verbal consent? If not, then am I in a good fighting position to get off the hook or better file a federal suit against the cops who did this to me?

Maybe. If the maintenance crew has a history of being informants, it can be probable cause.
If police have to have physical evidence or a tip off from a "credible informant," they can get a search warrant from a judge. If you suspect your apartment maintenance guy saw your grow, the halt production. Don’t chance it.Never allow
apartment maintenance into your apartment without an appointment. You have to be prepared for things like burst pipes where you don't have they can enter without permission. A small plain sight cabinet grow would be better concealed in an apartment.
