OMAHA, Neb. -- Omaha police arrested two men in what they called a major marijuana-growing operation at a home near 120th and Douglas streets.
Police said they seized more than 400 plants during a raid at the home.
“Nothing ever happens in this cul-de-sac,” said neighbor Robert Anderson. “It’s very quiet out there.”
Neighbors said the home police raided used to be a problem when its former owner lived there and threw loud parties. Lately, they thought things had calmed down, except for some late-night visitors.
“They had reports of people going in and out of the house at night, which they weren’t supposed to be,” said Omaha Police Department spokesman Michael Pecha.
He said officers needed to use the powers of a real estate inspection to unlock the case.
“We went into the house to change the locks because it was undergoing foreclosure procedures,” he said.
Holed up behind the windows, officers found marijuana plants covering the entire home, from fresh saplings to hydroponic plants that were fully grown.
“I had a cop tell me it’s the biggest thing he’d seen in 19 years,” said Anderson.
Anderson watched narcotics officers storm the home and come out with three truckloads of grow lights, fans, sophisticated water filtration systems and other items.
“It was an impressive amount of equipment they pulled out,” he said. “I mean serious dollars in equipment.”
KETV NewsWatch 7 showed the photos of the raid to a retired narcotics officer, who said the operation looked like it was in its early stages. He said whoever was growing the plants hoped to sell the marijuana -- the operation was worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Police said they didn’t expect to make an easy arrest, but in this case, the people came to them.
“As (officers) were dismantling the operation, the residents of the house both arrived,” Pecha said.
“He drove up and they had a police car down the cul-de-sac and blocked him in and that was the end of that,” Anderson said.
Jason Brasch and Corey May were taken to jail on charges of manufacturing marijuana.
“I was truthfully happy to see it happen and get this sick place cleaned up,” said Anderson
