Anyways our plan always was to drop the joint down the vent OR drop it in between the gap the gear shifter has (it's usually covered by that black plastic fuzz stuff)
Anyways my questions are:
a) How hard would it be to retrieve it after
b) If a cop searched the car (no drug dog) would he find it?
c) Where does the vent lead to? What about the gear shift?
d) Would a drug smelling dog find it (I am pretty sure eys)

I was visiting a Cop forum recently and they were discussing that the center console and gear shift area is the prime target to search as most think exactly the same thing.
You might not want to drop a joint down the vent. Here's why:
On most cars the dash vents and defroster vents lie on a horizontal plane. The plenums meet in the center where there is a diverter flap. If you shove something in those vents, it generally doesnt go very far. Few inches in most cases and a flashlight will illuminate most items against the black plastic. Few cars have vertical ducting sections and they are generally in the center.
Test your own vents with a light while sliding items in connected to a wire or string for retrieval.
On most E-brakes and shifters, the rubber flaps and plastic coverings are easily moved aside enough to view the voids.
Something else I have gleaned from Law Enforcement forums is that they will commonly search in spots they deem easy for the driver to access. If its easy for you to get at, its easy for them to find. Back seats are big targets too.
If a k-9 alerted to the dash of an auto and I suspected smugglers, I would take the dash apart. If I expected the motorists were users only, I would not make the effort. Most interdiction officers cannot discern the difference between the two so dropping a joint into your vents could lead to a legal dash removal.
I recommend the same thing I recommend in Traffic Stops...eat the joint!!!
