I donno man... I have a friend down in Arizona and they've been telling me how American tourists are being kidnapped and or killed all the time, especially in border towns or drug towns where traditionally you could easily find those things. If you are white and traveling people will assume you have money or you can get money when your life is put at stake.
You are better off I think going to Jamaica. Still has some bad parts, but safer and just as nice.
