I just wanted to add some personal experiences to highlight some things Barry wrote on the page regarding prison conditions:
| Quote: | | Jail is not a country club like I was taught as a child. Growing up, I often heard the comment, "They've got colored TVs and pool tables. Hell, they have it better than us." That is a lie!!! Jail is the most depressing place a person can be. It smells like urine and feces, the sounds of jail are chilling, the food is inadequate and our prisoners must constantly be on guard for their safety. |
He just scratched the surface here. When in the State joint, there were TV's and recreation equipment. What most people dont' know though, is that ALL of it comes directly from PROFIT of the prison "commissary" or store. This is profit off of what is charged the inmates to acquire proper toiletries and junk food. None of it came from the tax payers taxes! It ALL came from the families, friends, and loved ones of those inmates pockets.
So far movements to take amenities sort out of prisons have had success. so where is the profit going now?
Here's a nice look into what you can expect your meals to consist of. Every inmate will have the opportunity to learn what it is he is eating unfortunately by virtue of kitchen duty.
One product in particular that was used regularly was "Ground Chicken By-Products". That's what these big sacks of it said. It looked like white hamburger. An occasional nail or beak section was a common rumor, or not. The kept actual red meat meat and whole chicken pieces under lock and key to prevent theft. The recipe for meat loaf called for equal portions of ground beef and ground chickigoo. The reality is that no matter how many keys you need, inmates will steal half of everything. The recipe ends up more like 75% chickigoo and 25% ground beef. You end up with a grey baked slab hidden under a thick layer of tomato paste. Mmmmn!
Some are worse than others. It's not the conditions that make a prison so much. It's being plummeted into a hostile land and watching everyone's "real world" relationships slowly dissolve. Then you wait for it to happen to you...
Here's a harsh reality I noted. I would estimate that 95% or moreof spouses and girlfriends left the relationship within a year. I met maybe one out of 200 people who were able to maintain any meaningful relationship with loved ones for longer than 5 years. I met ONE person whose husband was in prison and she visited him every weekend for almost ten years at that point. One Woman out of thousands of examples I saw. Sad what the system does to families.
"Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage;
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage;
If I have freedom in my love
And in my soul am free,
Angels alone, that soar above,
Enjoy such liberty." - Richard Lovelace |

| Watch the show lockup Raw on MSNBC or Lockdown on National Geographic Channel. The inmates will tell you it's not fun in there. |

Ive seen quite a range of conditions.
Been in modern county jails and rusty barred rural cells that are more like the guts of a Battleship.
C.C.A. runs institutions that are more reminiscent of a mental hospital.
Some prisons are concrete walled and tin roofed. Giant hot box.
Some are like Shawshank. Mainly turn of the century facilities. Old Leavenworth Penitentiary is very imposing site. "The Walls" in Jefferson city, Mo is still in use last I knew but has been condemned for over a decade.
The M.C.F.P. in Springfield, MO. holds many secrets.
Most of the old prisons do. |

| One thing i saw on a show about the Maricopa County Jail in Arizona is that they have live streaming video of the jail and inmates available for public viewing on the internet.This was a few years ago so i dont know if they're still running it,I should look it up.The problem i have with this is the obvious privacy issues.This is a county jail meaning that there are innocent people being held there awaiting trial.Some of the inmates there will be found not guilty.Yet their face has been broadcasted for everyone in their community to see. |

My friend once told me in order to kill time while in jail, he would just walk in circles.
He also got his ass beat because he wouldn't give this guy his fruit...
He got his shirt ripped, and the guards saw his nipple rings, and they made him take them out... and that pisses me off because I spent the $60 to get them pierced.. nothing funnier then watching your friend squirm in pain in good humor |

spongeloaf! thats funny! I was told that some of the meat was grade "D" whatever that means.
But ah the horrors of prison. I have occasional nightmares about prison. Not what you expect you sickos!
Dreaming about the sick feeling of separation and isolation that follows the sound of a heavy electric door closing. It is one the most profound sounds I have heard. |

I think I may have had it worse in county. There is no worse feeling then have to stand in front of your door in your underwear, face the door watch the lights go off then the guard slams the door in your face.
Psycological bullshit. Makes you not want to go the fuck back.
Still the spongeloaf. My dude worked in the kitchen and said the guards actually mixed the "concoction" and the guards were not told what was in it.
Since when do cops cook our food? Also why, cause they are some hatefull basterds that I know would fuck with the food. I wonder if there are alot of cameras affixed to the wall in the litchen to make sure things like this do not happen. |

Try the "Reception and Diagnostic Center" in Fulton, MO. 30 or so of us shoved butt ass naked into a 10'x15' room and then led out single file in a long hall. They make you close your eyes and raise your arms while the spray you down with delousing solution. You then are fed through a shower and out into a ill fitting jumpsuit. This is Nazi shit and should be reserved for those who actually hurt someone. I can name many ways of legally dehumanizing someone. |
