| Got some bud growing outdoors and there doing really well. I was wondering if you can tell the strain or potency of a pot plant by looking at the leaves or anything? [/img] |

| my buddy if he has kind seeds he just looks up different strains on the internet. I don't really have an answer but I think it would be kinda hard to looka t your plant and tell the strain. Indica or sativa maybe but the strain would be hard. Unless your Soc I guess. |

Skiny leaves = sativa
Fatter leaves= indica
There are also tons of hybrids.
You can usually tell from looking at the buds how potent they are. The smell, and also the amount of "hairs" on the bud the more red and white the better. |

I know lots of things but horticulture is not one of my strong points. The consumer end is where I am at.
That being said, yeah, like a life long wine drinker, I know whats good or not by a combination of smell. taste, appearance and gut instinct. Sometimes some shitty looking brown bud has just been left too long in a hot place and picked up a tad too much heat. Break a bud open and seedless green inside.
Joe could probably go nuts here, but here's details I notice when handling cured Cannabis.
Is it bricked or "natural".Are the buds dense nuggets or stringy and loose? What colors do the bud consist of? I look for the green of leaf, the colors of the hairs and number present compared to the volume. What color are the buds themselves? Are there noticeable sparklies? Is it resinous? Wet? Dry? Is it long stiff stems or small spiky brambles? Are the seeds mature if present? White? Striped? Black? Does it smell like cat piss or lawn clippings? does it smell fruity or piny?
I notice more things but well, you get the idea.
As far as I can tell, you have to be pretty damn intimate with strains to tell them apart while growing. I doubt most people distinguish much beyond sexing differences.
My wife don't know a Ford from a Chevy. That's not so subtle a difference to me but to her they all look the same. |

No...........on both......
Resin?......well, no established link on resin and potency (some of most resinous not the most potent, etc....)
Leaves as above can give you an idea to the basic composition.....but, not really, because still have to see yet what it produces....
Smell should give you an idea of what your looking at, to an extent (but finished, dried and cured product may also take on different tones from when in later flower), so.......
If talking something taken from a specific group, breeder.....someone who has run a lot of things might be able to pinpoint, or, have a rough idea, but, again, that's if you have an idea as to the origin...
Thousands upon thousands of strains and crosses circulations......known breeders (companies) all the way through people who have run their own crosses and circulated them, and so on and so on....
Kind of like having a bottle of unlabeled wine.....pinpointing location, vineyard, and year...
Main problem with unknown things, as elsewhere, is , you just have to wait and see and watch regarding your finish times because no known/hard data.......which, for someone experienced can be a little easier (because they might be able to glance and estimate how much approximate time left)
Nah.....can't tell either just by a look.....(an idea...but, not anything remotely firm....)
Finished product will give you best idea...anything before just speculation....(which again is open to specifics.....if your looking at heavy, thick, and dark green the size of basketballs , well....safe to say a heavy indica |
