I don't know why those parents seem so shocked. The book doesn't really tell any lies. If you go to http://www.justaplant.com, you can read about half of the book on the website as a sneak peak.

I don't know if the author covers it in the rest of the book, but I think he should write another children's book. Maybe on the subject of other pain medicines that are legal with a prescription in all states, like codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone etc... Also show them where most of them come from, what else they can make, and how easy it is to overdose on them(unlike marijuana, which is IMPOSSIBLE!). Codeine is made from mostly ground up poppy powder. THE SAME PLANT MAKES HEROIN!!! Which also used to be marketed as cough medicine!?!?!?!?! wtf

I mean it is understandable that marijuana is illegal(sarcasm) considering you can't patent it. It would be a shame to see all those big drug corporations loose money on "unpatentable" medicine.

If anyone can correct me on that, I would love to hear it. That's just another reason why I think drug corporations aren't pushing for the legalization of marijuana. I don't know much about a patents. I do know that you can't patent a plant unless it is newly discovered or invented. Even at that, the patent only lasts for 20 years.

Plant Patent Info

wooo, I needed to get that off my chest!

This is how corn and most of our other agricultural genomes are patented.
Why couldn't Cannabis strains be patented?

Quote:
In general, raw products of nature are not patentable. DNA products usually become patentable when they have been isolated, purified, or modified to produce a unique form not found in nature.

from:http://www.ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/elsi/patents.shtml
and from same page:
Quote:
When a biotechnology patent involving an altered product of nature is issued, the patent holder is required to deposit a sample of the new invention into one of the 26 worldwide culture depositories. Most DNA-related patents are issued by the USPTO, the European Patent Office, or the Japanese Patent Office.

Currently over three million genome-related patent applications have been filed. U.S. patent applications are confidential until a patent is issued, so determining which sequences are the subject of patent applications is impossible. Those who use sequences from public databases today risk facing a future injunction if those sequences turn out to be patented by a private company on the basis of previously filed patent applications.

Scary shit. Secret applications of DNA ownership where its impossible to find out whats being applied for until its issued?! Sounds like when people were snatching up domain names.

So for an analogy, correct me if it is inapt, to see if I have this right. Say cars only came in black. Ford sells the only cars and one type only. This is natural for cars for the analogy.
I get a car, but I paint it red and cause all subsequent copies made of that car to be Red. The first the world has seen. I call it new and distinct model from the old and declare ownership of it and any future "colors" derived from my "invention". 50 years later someone makes a yellow car and I sue them successfully, I own cars of every color except black.

Even Farther out there but...
What if a persons genome could be owned because of a particular vaccination has changed a "product" into one that is better or different than originally found in its natural state. Will the first cloned human be patented?
