... Ally
This is a recent event... So I'm at a concert with a couple friends seeing a band we all know at a club. They finish up their set and we were all hanging outside and wanted to go smoke with one of our better buddies.
We would have went to the trailer but it was occupied by people already smoking. So the 4 of us go to an ally behind the club. While walking behind there were a couple of guys themselves rolling a joint there. We walked further up to where there was a light and back entrance for the club and rolled it up.
Started smoking, and some guy (who looks like he smokes), comes out and tells us we can't be back there, so we go, and we move down the alley to the grooved area the other guys were rolling, who had now left. We're smoking, and in the meantime 2 of my friends lit up cigarettes. So nearly done with the joint, we see some flashlights coming down the alley, and of course it turns out to be 3 cops, one plainclothes. My friend with the remaining roach turns and quickly clips it and drops it on the ground. So the cops see us and ask us "so what are you doing" and also something like "smells like weed". We were all mainly silent, keeping our rights, but seeing the smoke in my friend's hand I say "we're smoking cigarettes" and one of the cops goes "smells like cigg-a-weed". My buddy chimes in and says "there were some guys smoking here that left right before us" and another friend at some point says "I'm with the band and we're just hanging out smoking cigarettes." The plainclothes says "I see cigarettes but I smell weed". One asks if we have any more weed and no one answers really, I feel like I lightly shook my head no, as do others. So the "detainment" goes on a little longer, I forget how my friend responded, but now at some point one of the cops tried to bluff us, saying "I saw you drop that joint" and my friend didn't respond(Hmm I forget?)... I feel like they asked a couple more questions, and asked him again "what about that joint" and he says "it was those other guys" so after a couple minutes of this one of the cops says "alright beat it" and we're off...
I donno how anyone can learn from this, but it was just the kind of situation where everyone kept their mouth shut, but also everyone involved said just the right things at just the right times to the different questions the police asked, and they let us go.
They didn't bother to search or pat down, but I didn't have anything on me anyway. My only suggestion to my friend afterward was that he should have quickly stepped on the roach with his shoe, concealing it from view, as they spotted it on the ground when he dropped it. He worried though that it could have stuck to his shoe, but I argued that was unlikely and even if it did they would still probably never have seen it.
I think the important thing to take from this is misdirection and subterfuge. OOH, and that I've said it before but will say it again in that even if you don't smoke tobacco cigarettes, it is a very good idea to have them as an alibi.
Also though I would say we were lucky, and not being minorities I am sure helped too. Had we been of darker skin I am sure we would have been arrested by ol whitey. |

| The area you were in actually might have helped as well. The area is obviously used frequently by business personnel, patrons, police, etc. They would have had a hard time proving a roach on the ground was yours. The aroma of pot smoke is strong and tends to hang around a bit, could belong to anyone. Thats why they try to get a confession, they don't have shit but suspicion. |
