Anyone using cell phones during transactions should be aware that the lines could be tapped by the LEO at any time. You can easily avoid this by buying a phone with an interchangable chip, then loading prepaid minutes onto it whenever needed. They do not ask for identification when you buy these and the chip can be replaced if the number gets too hot. Some companies make you fill out a form, but you can give a false name so it doesn't trace back.

Keep in mind, these prepaid phones can still get tapped.. but they are far less likely to find out what number you are using if it's prepaid.

Pay phones like the ones in front of gas stations? confused Prepaid cells are cheaper, safer, and more convenient.. trust me on that. When it comes down to doing deals, you need an accessable way to get ahold of people. You aren't just going to run around to a bunch of pay phones with drugs or cash on you.

Ok, first off - I don't smoke, drink, etc. For one thing, with my metabolism, it would be a _really_ expensive habit.

That being said, I think there are way more productive uses of time and money than busting people who smoke MJ, and if they are doing other crimes while high, bust them for that.

Now, with regards to prepaid phones - there are two types of cellular networks in the United States - CDMA (Verizon, Sprint, Alltel, etc.) and GSM (AT&T/Cingular, T-Mobile).

With a CDMA phone, there is no SIM card to swap out. As you are refering to ones with "interchangable chips", you must be talking about GSM phones (which have a removable SIM).

When your GSM phone first associates with a cellular network, it provides two pieces of information - the ICCID (the SIM card number - used to identify the account), and the IMEI number (basically, the cellular phone serial number). The IMEI is used (among other things) to run the stolen handset database.

What this means in practical terms is this - switching SIMs doesn't do anything particularly useful in terms of privacy.

An example scenario - Local police aren't likely to do this. As for the feds, I wouldn't put it past them.

There is a person of interest (a dealer). After busting him, they pull his phone records (you called him several times at odd hours). You, being a paranoid sort of person, switch SIMs regularly, and haven't talked to him in two months.

The feds then go to the phone company with a time, and a number. The phone company has the technical capability to (and probably would) look up which IMEI was associated with the number at that time. Given how often prepaid cellular is used for home-made bombs in Iraq, it wouldn't surprise me if this information is retained for a _long_ time.

So, once the cellular company has the IMEI, they can pull all the phone numbers associated with all the SIMs that IMEI has used, and all of the people you've called, or who called you in that time. This can be automated very easily.

So, you might think that the answer is to ditch the phone. Well, it helps, but not as much as you might think. If you (or someone you called) is under investigation, it's trivial (from a technical standpoint) to figure out which calls to that person (or to someone you call frequently) were made from the same pre-paid provider. After showing a judge that "over a 1 month period, this person made 30 calls at weird hours to this suspected dealer, and abruptly stopped. Immediately after, more calls were received, with the same pattern, from another prepaid cell." If they can get a warrant for the first one, they can get one for the second. Again, not something the locals are likely to do, but the Feds certainly can.

Finally, one other thing you should be aware of. AT&T (and most likely other providers) has a "Community of Interest" network, based on the idea "You Are Who You Call". They keep records of everyone you call for association purposes. Also, by extension, they keep records of everyone using AT&T who calls you. The reasoning behind this is that people who open new accounts are likely to call (mostly) the same people. This is used to identify people that don't pay their bills and open new accounts under different names.

Don't believe me? Ask AT&T

Now, the real question is this - given that:
- AT&T has given information to the NSA without warrants
- We know this information is collected
- Given a half-decent "expert witness", it should be easy to convince a judge this is probable cause

Do you really think that AT&T wouldn't give out this information?

Now, if one were looking for reasonably anonymous communication, VOIP offers some opportunities. If a call were required to be made to a landline, Skype and a prepaid debit card (from an open or paid wifi connection) are pretty hard combo to beat.

Also, each time you make a call it's possible for them to know where you were when you made that call. I don't know how close they can get to your exact location but I know they are able to say what side of the street you are on.

Thank you for helping cyt0plas. We need more people like you.

You'll have to set your SSL proxy to the use TOR. Notice the HTTPS, the site is using SSL encryptions.

Just got TOOL/OPTIONS/ADVANCED click the NETWORK tab and SETTINGS under the connection dialog. You'll see the option for SSL proxy change that to read the same as your HTTP proxy.
That should fix it.

I don't know where you live but around here payphones are slowly disappearing. We used to have 10 just in my town, now we have 2. There will come a time when using a payphone is not much of an option.
