Barry, I drove buy a large sign on I-70 the other day that said "Narcotics checkpoint ahead, be prepared to stop, narcotic dogs in use". These signs were just before the exit ramp, but there was no road block ahead. Do you think they had their dog and were stopping all cars that took the exit ramp?

Thanks

Sounds like it. This semms to be a common ploy. They figure the guilty will pull off early.
Then again there just might be one up ahead as well or not at all. Prepare for the expected as Barry teaches.

I have never heard of that. what state are you in? We have sobriety for alcohol checkpoints but how can they do random stops for drugs?

I hear they do that in FL. It's legal and they do it. They pull over the people who exit the ramp. They have one in FL where the ramp is fake. Nothing up there but cops.

We drove from PA to Texas in March and in Alabama on Route 59 ( believe)there were signs that indicated that you may be required to pull over for random searching of your vehicle. At the exit, there were cars on the actual exit ramp (although nobody near us were told to pull over) along with 3 or 4 police cruisers, several dogs, LEO dressed in camo with rifles. It was actually very very scary looking and we were carrying cannabis with us along with paraphanalia. I was so stoned and oh... so paranoid that I thought I was going to have a heart attack. We were on our way to my elderly mother's to move her from Texas to PA with us and I oh so did not want to make a phone call to my mother from a jail in Alabama trying to explain how I managed to get myself into a mess like that. I wasn't even that scared when I came home one day to find my house swarming with Drug cops and dogs because we had 3 plants growing in my backyard.

So, yes, somehow they must be well within their rights to do random stop and search manuevers. I saw it.

It was in Missouri. I had heard about it before, but never believed they realy would do it that way, until I saw it with my own eyes. Shocked

I've seen this done in Arizona, between Nogalas and Tucson on Interstate 19. All the smugglers know they do this, so the only thing it really does is "weed" out the amateurs (no pun intended).

I went through a checkpoint just north of Tombstone, AZ. I was like WTF is this doing here? Smugglers like to sight-see or something?

I know KC has strong interdiction efforts at all major highways around the city. I-35 N. has produced tremendous busts in the past. K.C's business loop I-435 is heavily patrolled. I could tell you common speed trap locations as well or they may be interdicting, who knows.

I did these roadblocks as an officer and they were very effective. They work three ways: 1. Police are ahead and each car must pass through a "driver license check." 2. The police are waiting at the exit ramp. 3. The police walk their K-9's alongside the road every so often to find drugs tossed out by motorist that got scared when they read the sign.

We post locations of such roadblocks on our interdiction map on this site.
