...Some folks think that the government has IR planes that can detect marijuana plants from the sky...I say that it only detects heat from growhouses etc....right?

I may be wrong. if i am Soc will tell me. but i thought that marijuana gave off heat as it was in its final stages of growth. but it also will detect the heat from the grow room
I also found that this sight might be helpful

In never get raided, Barry explains exactly how a FLIR camera works, and gives actual footage of a FLIR camera so you can see exactly what they can and cannot see.

On the sit ei posted i am sure it said that the IR can see the shape of the plant and that the crystals and trichomes are what gives off the heat while the plant is "sleeping"( lights off)

i belive they can see in your home. maybe not you plants, they can deifnatley see the radiating heat from a vent or some other way of letting heat out.
I ran across this in another forum and thought it would be a pretty good read on this subject

Does anyone know definately if IR can detect pot plants...O-u-t-s-i-d-e?!!!...the plants themselves...and I don't mean suspectable debris like pots, soil bags, garden tools, etc... There's a belief around here that IR can detect the very plants themselves...I say not...doesn't make sense to me.

goodmorning weed, this might help you understand IR or FLIR. my guess is, NO FLIR cannot see your outdoor flowers. if they know where to look they dont need FLIR, they just go in daytime and see. FLIR mostly detects heat.

Nice Vid of a Guy playing with a Raytheon Flir Camera!
Not Specific to plants but this is educational none the less!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mV4ecEbV1s
You can buy this guy's Master's Thesis on camouflage techniques for multi-spectral sensor technology.

Funny but informative:

Suspect Detection:

Heres a Wiki on Spectral Band Usage:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-spectral_image
And for the future of sensing technology:
http://fullspectralimaging.net/default.aspx
I have found no concrete evidence that FLIR can differentiate vegetation by its heat. But! Given some of the resolution of the video links I posted, you could differentiate pot by it characteristic structure as in visible spectrum. Some of these cameras have very fine resolution!
What you DO have to worry about is a chopper seeing you or your band of guerrilla growers midnight farming! Pot might by difficult to distinguish from the air, but hot ass people are not.
Given the future shows multi-spectral capability in cameras, I can only say this: It's only a matter of time before there are devices capable of receiving ALL wavelengths with extraordinary resolution. It is easy to conceive that a substance, say THC, will emit radiation at very specific wavelengths. Spectral analysis is not new.
Imagine a camera that is a spectral analyzer with settings for "pot" "gold" "Explosive" "synthetic molecules", what ever you want, an endless list of detection frequency's.
Look at the field of astronomical observation if you want to know whats possible to observe beyond the visible and to what detail. Flir is already handheld, there is through-wall observation technology, so how long till something like this is in every Agency's hands?
There shall be no privacy.
