what if a cop asks to search your car and you say that you are in a rush and that ur late for work or something and you dont have time for the search. Would they still call in a k9 unit and what gives them the right to do this in the first place. And also does the dog just walk around the outside of the car or do they let it inside your car?
If a K-9 unit is close by and will not take long to arrive they will likely call one. In fact, many times they call one at the time they make the traffic stop of a car they want to search in anticipation of a refusal. That way they won't have to wait as long for one to arrive. The courts have ruled that a K-9 sniff of the outside of your vehicle is not an invasion of your privacy so they really don't need much of a reason to do one. They cannot hold you for an "unreasonable" amount of time while waiting for a K-9, but the courts have never given a bright line ruling on what an unreasonable amount of timr is...each case is looked at separately according to the totality of the circumstances. If the K-9 alerts to your vehicle they will send the dog inside it to further the search
