Growers must constantly deal with heat generated from the necessary lighting needed to grow healthy and profitable buds.

Law enforcement is aware of this and uses two main methods to detect this tale-tell sign of an indoor grow.

1) FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red)

2) Suspiciously high electric bill

Does anybody care to post how growers avoid these? I have a few good tips that I will post early next week.

So the first thing is, DON"T TELL ANYONE. Don't put anything related to the grow in with your normal trash. Burn it if you can or transport to a unconnected location for disposal, make sure no identifying information is in the trash also. Don't throw out grow light boxes, Fert boxes, High Times mags really anything that can be connected with cannabis.

I've heard that to use a FLIR on a house they need warrant. Has to do with being able to so inside a private residence.

Your grow room should be towards the middle of the house, which will make it harder to pick up on FLIR.
They also make a FLIR blocking material you can buy. But i suspect they can see it, If you place glass in front of a infrared camera it looks like a big cool spot. I imagine this film would look the same.

Another option is to spread the heat generated by the lamps out over your whole house. They make lights that you can cool, they are sealed except for a hole on each end. Run a hose that brings in fresh air to the input side and output the exhaust around your house. Make sure you are running clean fresh air in, or your going to stink up your whole house. A smart idea would be to put a carbon filter on this exhaust line also, just in case a little skunk smell seeps in.

As for smell get a carbon filter, they wont take out 100% of the smell but it will help. Also vent into your attack to further hide the smell, hot air tends to rise it should vent out of the top of your house. Also try and keep your house temp the same as your grow room, this will serve to hide the "hot spot".

I've always been told they need a warrant to get information on you electric bill, See first part on avoiding this. But with trends lately they might not even need a warrant anymore, or the electric company may well turn you in.

The electricity is another matter, as far as I know if your running just a small light (400-600 watt) they won't even notice it. For a bigger op I imagine if you slowly increase usage, say over a 3-6 month period It will look less suspicious. A big spike in usage, like plugging in 2000 watts of light would be much easier to spot. Use the most efficient lights you can, it will save you some money and lower your bill.

You could cut in under the meter also, but if you do make sure to hide it well. The guys that check your meter are trained to look for tampering. Maybe dig down a foot or two, enough so you can fill it in without it looking odd. Best to do this right after the meter reader has left, this will give the grass time to grow back before he comes back.

Thats all I can think of right now, feel free to question anything i have said. But please explain why you think it's a good or bad idea.

This is attempting suicide. Unless you are a licensed electrician NEVER touch a live feed or attempt to bypass a meeter.

Not just because stealing is wrong, your life is not worth risking just to save a couple bucks. Just because cannabis is wrongly illegal doesn't justify making yourself a real thief to grow your own for a little less money.

A well grown crop for a personal stash is going to cost you $70 +/- a month in electricity*, if you can't float $70 a month you need to stop smoking up until you can.

(look at your electric bill from last month, take the KWH kilowatt hour and multiply it by: the watts of lighting, lets say 1 400w mh for veg 1 600w hps for bloom and 2 80w cfl's for rooting thats 1160w total, to get a rough idea of usage assume they will all be on for about 16 hours a day thats WattsXhoursXdays or 1160x16x31= multiply your usage into your actual KWH costs to figure your rate, in some parts the rates are 40% higher than others so make sure you are ready for the bill)

You can swap ALL you other lights to CFL's,( costs $150 to buy bulbs but saves you $8-10 month on the electric) you only line dry you clothes or use a laundry mat no electric dryers! NO big tv's or computers in the house, or keep them to a minimum. Just use your brain and think "I want a green house" (I mean eco green not ganja green)and most people can find ways to save another $10 or $15 a month to offset the additional usage.

Everything else look cool Cool

as far as the flir I recommend using a basement, or building a special room inside a room so it has a "room temperature" air pocket around the garden area. I have seen how to build vids online about designing grow rooms and building them but I haven't looked for or seen any since OG went down.

I'm under the impression that yes if you put up some kind of IR blocker It will lt will leave a pattern/footprint something that can be considered suspicious enough especially buy a trained professional.
But mirrors even Plexiglas mirrors (but still pretty expensive) reflect back the temp that is between it and the flir camera, which I'm not sure will look normal or not to a trained professional
Heres a interesting link. if you can't link from this forum, try copy and paste the below into a search window, then click to it there.

3.14mpDaddy is right you should not cut in under the cable, even if you know what your doing. I didn't put a lot of thought into that one, I've worked as an electrician before. So the thought of it being unsafe didn't come to mind when I wrote it.

He also is correct that you shouldn't steal, if you get caught it's only going to cause more trouble then you are already in. Also I imagine they must monitor electric usage by sections. If one section is using more electricity then people are paying for they will probable send a guy out to find the drain.

In my opinoin, reducing heat can be done by
good ventilation design.

Buy a cool-tube which surrounds hot lamp and also
bypass continuous wind flow from carbon filter
attached fan duct to outside.

Doing so will decrease heat temp and also decrease
odor problems.

Most home growers tend to use under 2000W, more like
400W to 1000W, and it will give you enough products.
For serious guys, like factory runners, it is bad
idea running ops in residential house.

Next generation growing will be using LED lights.
Some are already in market but it is not really
compalable with old school HPS or MH lights.

However, they consume lower wattage,
(about 1/10th ~ 1/15th) and almost no heats.

Instead of encasing a grow box in reflective material, Place it to make the box appear to radiate from specific areas to mimic say, a garage freezer? Place reflective material around the upper portions and vent from the bottom to simulate heat from the compressor. IR camouflage in essence.
There are plenty of IR and FLIR images of houses under surveillance, and ordinary objects on the web.
A grow room is more difficult to camo.
