| Hey there, I just wanted to hear all of your opinions on best soil types and germination mediums. I've been germinating the old school way by placing the chosen seeds between soaked paper cloths, placing it in a bag, and shoving it a drawer for a few days. This has worked, however, only few seeds like to sprout and it takes a long time. I know seeds differ in sprouting time but there must be a better (or more efficient) way. The soil I use has the correct amount of nutrients before adding my own (20%Nitrogen 20%Potassium 20%Phosphorus) What should I add? What are the best soil types? |

Any potting type soil you buy should be fine, add some sand or pearlite to help with drainage.
As for nutes I like foxfarm. |

Your queston is for an opinons. For germinating mediums. First put the seeds in a small cup with 5 or 6 oz. of water, a little 3 percent hygrogenporoxcide 2 teaspoons or so. then in a warm dark place for 24 - 48 or more hours. they will crack open a little and probably sink, their ready put them in a... I like Rapid Rooters there plugs with a little hole at top,put the seed in not too deep you should be able to see the seed. Rapid Rooters found at hydro store. and some garden centers. Those 'Jiffy' peat pots work just as good.
and you know that you won't need to fert. those seedlings till they get some what grown. |

I had terrible experience with Jiffy,
they dry too fast..
Just like Dutch said, throw seeds in cup of
luke warm water and let it pass 12 hrs in dark place.
After then, tap seeds if any of them are still float.
(use clean, soap washed finger)
They will all sink under water.
Let it stay another 12 hr or so, and you will see
most of them shows small root cracked out of seed.
Use Dixi cup with draining holes at the bottom
filled with organic pot soils.
Again, never use dirty finger when you are
potting tap rooted seeds. Those tab roots are
very sensitive to germs.
Also, do not use potting soils that 'slowly release
nutes' type. Just buy organic soils and mix it
with pearlite and wormcastings. Pearlite will help
giving some rooms inside pot and let roots breath
and drain water better, and worm casting will
deliver nice nitrogen which is very important for
young growing seedlings.
After transplant tap rooted seeds, let it stay in
dark, warm place for another couple days, and
if successful, you will see some green popping
out of dixi cup |
