Hello,

I am a teacher and am concerned about the use of drug dogs for random searches at my school. I was recently told that dogs were coming to campus in the next few days to try and give alerts on students rumored to bring drugs to school for sale. (Supposedly, they are leaving it in the bathroom to be picked up by the buyer later in the day via text message alerts. The dealers never have MJ on them after homeroom. They are hoping to find minute evidence that is was possibly on them that morning. The school/police want to tie "high amounts" of cash in their possession to drugs. Not sure how it will hold up in a court of law though.) The problem is that I am daily smoker in private and am concerned that my possessions may have come in contact with crystals that may give an alert. I was told that "even if a student has no drugs on them, the dog can detect the smell from their pores up to 2 days after having smoked" by the adminstrator that informed us of this up coming search.

I have worked very hard building my career and am a very respected teacher by both my students and the other teaching staff. I did not think that my personal life could affect my professional life in this way since I passed the initial drug test. Today, I am no longer confident that my privacy will be protected if a dog alerts his handler near my possessions, my body or my clothing. I just laundered all of my work clothes and removed them from where I smoke.

So, my questions are:
1. Other than abstinence, what is the best way to safeguard my professional life without drastically changing my personal life?
2. Is it true that the dogs can alert based on the smell of MJ in the sweat from your pores? If so, up to how many days afterwards? (I have a slow metabolism, in other words, I'm overweight and a very regular smoker. Is that a factor?)
3.Do I need to wash my clothing more than once before returning to work in them since they may have been around smoke in the past? (Do you have any detergent/soap recommendations?)
4.Will regular shampoo/conditioner/soap remove the odor of smoke or evidence of crystals from my person if done in the morning before work? (Do you know of brands that work better than others?)

I know I have asked a lot of questions but other professionals out there may have similar concerns.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to your response.

Regards,
Concerned4Myself

I don't have answers for your particular questions, but I wanted to thank you for sharing your situation, one that offers a new perspective on drug dogs and schools.

do some hard exercise like jogging + running
and you will sweat alot, and drink lots of water.

I think it will flush out some of THCs from your body
faster than doing nothing.

I was in highschool soon after dogs were being brought into public schools. My friends and I were heavy smokers who consumed in the mornings before school. Only once did a dog ever alert in our school, it was on my friends jacket that was heavily resin stained. The cops took him to the office, searched him and found nothing. He was back in class about 15 minutes later. The only thing the cops and faculty could say for certain was that the dog alerted to a scent on his jacket.
Barry's DVD actually goes into great detail about the way a narcotic detector dog works and is trained. I can say with a good deal of certitude that just that one section would clear up alot of your concerns.

Concerned4Myself,

I certainly hope you are monitoring this board for my answers. My heart breaks for you. You should never be placed in this position and I am going to help you however I can. First, both my parents are high school teachers and have been for over 20 years. They are so disgusted with the progress of our public schools and are tired of being forced to teach how to pass a test instead of really teaching. If the students do not pass the federally mandated test, the school loses money. This system causes schools to be test oriented instead of education oriented.

My two honor roll student daughters returned from their first day of school this year advising they would be placed in isolation of they returned with the red streaks placed in their hair. A long story short...my daughters protested, the police were called and told if I did not take them home, they would go to jail. The principal and superintendent looked me in the eye and said they would allow the police to take them if I did not! Of course I took my daughters home and am now fighting the school. I will go through the entire grievance process while homeschooling my children. There is no way I am going to place that type of insane authority over my kids. I now understand why colleges are fast to recruit homeschoolers and why the U.S. ranks 42cnd in literacy out of the entire world. Public schools are simply not delivering and parents are taking their kids out of that system at alarming rates.

As for your case, YOU ARE SAFE. I will answer your questions using the numbers you provided.

Question #1: Don't change your pot habit. If you are going to be drug tested, purchase the most expensive de-toxifing drink at your local pipe shop, follow the directions and pass! Better yet, if they don't watch the pee go in the cup, purchase clean urine from the same shop and use it. Keep smoking.

Question #2: I have never heard of a K-9 alerting to a person because of THC permeating through the skin. I believe this is a scare tactic. I owned a company called "Chiefs and Sheriffs Advanced K-9 Services." I had 6 schools I searched with my dog on a monthly basis. I learned administrators are more interested in having a K-9 visit as a deterrent instead of an arrest. However, the trend seems to be changing to making arrests so beware of school K-9's but understand what's happening behind the scenes.

First, few dogs are trained to alert to humans. The human alerting dogs are used in airports and such and are trained for a passive alert (sitting or barking) instead of an aggressive alert (scratching.) This is done for obvious reasons...police do not want dogs scratching humans. U.S Customs and Border Patrol and Airport Security have the only human sniffers I know of. Regular police departments have the same type of dog I had...agressive alert dogs that would not alert to a human even if the human were carrying a kilo of pot! Ascertain if the K-9 visiting your school alerts by scratch or sit. If scratch, you are totally safe.

If the K-9 visiting your school is a human sniffer, you are still safe and here is why: First, the handler is crazy to report a dog alerted to a teacher because he secretly does not trust his dog (most handlers have witnessed their dogs false alerting and have lost confidence in their pooch.) If the handler calls an alert on a teacher, then who is going to search the teacher? There is a lot of liabilty here that the principle and dog handler probably do not want to accept. If you are searched, of course they will find nothing and then you can sue!!! It is not illegal to smell like marijuana only to possess it. Your answer to the alert is the dog is wrong!!!!

Question #3: You do not have to wash your clothes. In fact, I recommend you smoke pot around your clothes and dare the dog to alert! Again, it is not illegal to have the odor of pot on you. Again, the dog is wrong!!! If you feel the need to wash your clothes, one washing in the normal laundry is sufficient to remove any contraband odors.

Question #4: Understandably, you are giving the dog too much credit. He will not alert to crystals on your hands and remember, there are too many ways for a dog to be wrong.

My only concern for you is to make certain your car is washed of these crystals. K-9 handlers at schools often check autos in the parking lots. If the dog alerts to your auto, same thing...claim the K-9 is crazy!!!

Please, Please, Please, you and the other cannabis toking teachers need to get together and show your anger and disapproval to your invasions of privacy. If told "Well, if you are not doing anything illegal then you have nothing to worry about." Your answer is "I do have to worry when my constitutional rights are being stripped daily." Say it!!!! Fight it!!! and maniupulate the system in your favor until we get these crazy laws changed. My heart breaks for you. I'm so sorry our country has come to this.

Thank you for your reply.
If I were in TX I would be honored to home-school for you. It is a shame that the people with the power to change education are ruining our children. School is not the same. A single test can make or break your child's academic record for that year! Some want our children to become mostly automatons that cannot think or imagine anything outside of what the popular media tells them. I will rest easy this evening and the rest of the year for that matter now that I have my questions answered. I will continue to teach my children at work how to learn and how to think for themselves. I do it for children like yours that have to go through this faulty system of education we have today. I hope that by example other teachers and administrators will see that our children can learn to think and therefore pass a test. Not learn just to pass a test!
Good luck with your children. I hope their school’s administration sees the error of its ways. I mean really, why does hair color affect learning in a classroom? They must answer that question for you. You should not keep them in an environment that would even ask them to change their appearance so they can learn. Teach them at home unless you can find a place that fosters learning not test taking.
As to my situation, they are the dogs that sit to alert, they do not scratch. How much does it matter?

Sincerely,
Concerned4myself

Be careful how you say things inside a headshop some are very picky about verbage. In Texas it is illegal to sell anything that is designed solely for defeating a drug test. I have seen people refused service because of the wording they used inside the shop.

Also synthetic concentrated urine is great. It has a long shelf life, is sanitary, doesn't require freezing, gauranteed drug-free and free of genetic markers.
