Are the majority of crimes committed because of the use of drugs or because of the penalties for drug possession and the high prices due to those penalties?
During alcohol prohibition the majority of crimes were committed because of the penalties for alcohol possession not because of the drinking of alcohol.
There would be no drug cartels and ruthless drug distribution networks if the drugs weren't illegal and the penalties so harsh. |

I was actually on Dallas radio a few months back discussing legalization and an officer called in with the same concern.
He stated that he hears many good reasons for legalization and his personal belief is that legalization would probably be a good thing. He stated his only concern was with impaired drivers, because he has personally seen people high to the point that they shouldn't drive. He asked how I address this issue.
I responded , Any type of impairment is bad. Be it from alcohol, marijuana, over the counter cough medicine, Tylenol PM, senility, emotional irrationality etc.. I would expect it to be treated the same way. Officer have skills and tools at their disposal to determine other types of impairment. Even in the case of alcohol impairment testing for BAC is only one of those tools.
In the case of the officer I spoke with, he genuinely listened to the points I made and wasn't just looking to make his own point. He was open minded to the discussion even though he had certain reservations, which I believe were legitimate. No one should want impaired people behind the wheel. I have also seen people (albeit mostly less experienced users) intoxicated to the point on marijuana that I certainly wouldn't want them on the same road as my family.
Sometimes when driving a fraction of a second in reaction time can make a huge difference. I believe if we are going to have an open and honest debate about the equalization of marijuana and alcohol, we (anti-prohibitionist) have to be willing to have the discussion about intoxication. |
