So the Forestry Service is the latest to play with spy toys. Great. Notice how much they paid for what is basically maybe a thousand dollar Hobby grade system with maybe a few grand in a small IR camera?
Note this comment regarding the DARPA technology:
| Quote: | | "an entirely new generation of perch-and-stare micro air vehicles |
A new generation? What was the last generation of these things?
The visual brought to mind by this was of the alarm triggering robotic bird in "The Incredibles". They are describing airframes with bird and insect qualities, or at least airframes that could easily be mistaken at a distance for a bird. Maybe that big black Vulture circling overhead really isnt a bird at all.
Heres a link with a warning from a UK professor that you'll enjoy. Check out this tidbit:

Congress in 2001 mandated that one third of military ground vehicles must be unmanned by 2015. According to the DoD report, "Unmanned Systems Roadmap 2007-2032," the Pentagon plans to spend $4 billion by 2010 on unmanned systems technology, with an eye toward increasing autonomy to free up troops that would otherwise have to monitor the robots closely. |

And if you think Scientific American is speculating on robotics use, just check out DARPA's page for the design contests for autonomously controlled vehicles.
If we survive global warming, peak oil, and collapse of the fractional reserve system, we will have robot Armies. Hell I would venture to say such technology stems from those threats as much as feeds them.
The gap between science fiction and science fact used to be huge. Measured in hundreds of years in the time of DaVinci. By Einstien it was reduced to decades, even as our fictional scope has extended to ever farther reaches.
What changes in technology will the Super Colliders bring? Physicists are orgasmic over Atlas:

An ever quicker changing world we live in. |

That thing is just awesome! I would love to play with one of those! I run RC/10 Trucks, 1/18 scale cars, and have a micro heli. RC hobby is great! Brushless motor and LiPo technology has really pushed the performance envelopes of every motorized hobby. Thanks for the link to that site! It'll keep me busy for awhile.
Back to reality... Holy shit Batman! That thing could spot a wart on a fleas penis at 1/4 mile in the dark! You just know the military figured a way to put miniature missiles or firearms on one of those! |
