This question is mainly for the LEO's here, but if you think it applies, post away!
I think most of us at some point in our lives have been busted for minor possession by a LEO (I know I have) and let go with a warning and without weed. My question is this:
What was it about that person or circumstance (or yours) that prompted you to give them a break? Even though you may have found evidence of criminal activity .
Is it just a matter of being too little a fish on the line? Or luck? |

Lots of factors.
I can't answer for all LEO'S on here but as far as myself it goes like this.
CHARACTER MATTERS: If you're an asshole, then so shall I be. Treat me with respect and you get the same in return. I have been doing this job for 16 years and at this point in my life the only people I put in jail for personal use either said or did something "STUPID" during the encounter.
CIRCUMSTANCES: I.E. Beating your wives ass and not getting rid of the dime bag in your pocket before I show up to handle the situation, AGAIN "STUPID"
HONESTY: If I ask questions and get the run around (16 years, spot a B.S. story a mile away) then sometimes I have the obligation to show you that I'm not some dumbass rookie.
***************disclaimer**********************
Be careful with this one some officers are wanting you to incriminate yourself or develop P.C. to search your stuff. Again I'm not answering for all but myself, when I ask you if you have anything before I search and you say "I have a joint in the console" then we will make seedlings grow on the side of the road with it and you're on your way.
AS YOU MENTIONED: Bigger fish to fry. I'm looking for felony arrest not the recreational user. If you know anything about drug transportation only a small percentage of mules actually use drugs. They are in it for the money. Some one driving down the road with shake on there lap and the strong odor of burnt in the vehicle usually is not hauling pound or kilo's
REMEMBER THERE IS NEVER A SECOND CHANCE AT A FIRST IMPRESSION. HOW YOU ACT WHEN I FIRST MAKE CONTACT WITH YOU DICTATES THE REST OF THE ENCOUNTER. START OFF WITH A BAD ATTITUDE AND IT WILL MOST LIKELY END THE SAME WAY. |

you pretty much confirmed what i wrote in a thread as to what i do to get warnings instead of citations,,first impressions are very important.
you know all these drill sargents in the millitary have this thing where they get chronic hearing problems for some reason,,,if it was just a joint in the glove box why not just adopt a chronic eye sight problem?
but then, if you did that you may not be able to sleep at night. But MAN You would have one big fan,,that individual would remember you for the rest of their life,,and in a good way no doubt haha
im just clowning i know you basically HAVE to do SOMETHING..you could get in trouble for not |

Thanks for the response! I know what you mean about spotting BS. I did a little time and witnessed every type of con game, B.S. and lies galore.
Very common sense approach to your job I might add.
I see the sense in the giving up the joint scenario. My own thoughts on that have been that if the LEO finds something obvious after you've lied to him, you have not only insulted his intelligence, but discredited yourself totally in the LEO's eyes. I would bet that the above situation empowers some officers as well. Like a good deed done. Guess you better make sure your joint is hidden really good or give it up in the hopes the LEO gives you a break.
I have owned up to having pipes and small amounts and never been busted. (L.A. though) |

O.K. Heres one from the opposite end of the spectrum. :
Describe those persons/vehicles you NEVER searched.
Another question, are LEO's taught specific "profiles" to match against suspects? Or, are those developed on the job. And finally, has there been a clash between experience and training in your case?
Be Warned...
I will pick your brain as long as you let me. |

To answer your question there is no person/vehicle that I would NEVER search. Smugglers come in all sorts of packages no'adays. From moma with her three children to granda'ma and grand'pa. For me its the totality of the circumstance. if the Story don't add up, or somthing just don't look right then I look further until I feel comfortable that there legit, or I find what im looking for. A lot of "thugs" are purchasing old patrol vehicles now and keeping them "LEO looking" thinking that "we" will not stop them. I pay close attention to vehicles that look like UC vehicles that im not familar with. |

Thanks for the reply. You pretty well confirmed what Ive always thought. Glad to that your looking for proof of legitimacy as well. A lot of LEO's mention "the Story". Would it be safe to say if a persons "Story" is plausible or checks out, that "reasonable innocence" is weighing the scales instead of reasonable suspicion? |

Just for the record.
I am white, wear glasses, am clean cut, and wear sports teams t-shirts or other things like that. I have never been pulled over even though I am not a good driver, and frequently, by accident, break traffic laws.
It may be of relevance to anyone who doesn't want to get pulled over or searched.
On the other hand, I am also viewed much more suspiciously by my brethren pot smokers. |

I've got the same thing going for me, except I have a good sized 'Jew fro' and look like I work for the Geek Squad. |

My step son,and I have played musical vehicles in the past,we had A Teal green Ranger, and He had an escort,He just turned 21,I am 41......no matter what He drives He gets pulled over, profile stops. He can get out of the vehicle, and I leave in it to go somewhere, and never have a cop even look my way,and people say I just look like a pot head,so go figure.....just food for thought |
