Hello everyone. Interesting site.

I've been across the the border from Canada twice in the past year. Have flown there several times through out my life. The other day I was denied access because 28 years ago I got busted for 3 grams of weed when I was 16 years old. At the time criminal records were given out to kids at 16. Canada has since changed it to 18. I was told it was waived from my record. (I realize the US doesn't recognize waivers) Both other times at this very border crossing last year I admitted to the DUI 22 years ago and the possession 28 years ago with "my disclaimer" and was let through. I felt honesty would serve me best.

The other day I spent over an hour there. I was just sitting there thinking, "please just search my vehicle so I can get going".......only to find out I'm being denied.

Now I have to go through major hoops and hurdles and do an extremely in depth application that "might" get approved after 3 months. Need a letter from employer. Two letters from upstanding influential citizens about my character. Fingerprinted by the RCMP. A letter authored by myself about myself. Copies of records on and on and on.

It's okay to be a risk of being dumb enough to climb behind the wheel after drinking. But a couple grams of weed 28 years ago when you were a fuzzy faced kid sixteen year old out in the woods with some freinds? That's VERY RISKY!

28 years later a privilege is revoked.....

IF they let me back in......

You should see how in depth this form is. I'm not sure about how much stuff they check up on. References etc. I don't want my employer to know about this....as petty and old as it is. I don't need that "possible" hassle at all. It doesn't state that I need to tell my employer why I need this letter of employment history etc which is nice. But it does ask my employer to state how many times i "NEED" to go to the USA on business. My employer might state "likely never" thus hurting my chances. Also my employer already knows i have a passport...so this letter isn't for that.....it something to do with entry to the States....hmmm. great!

WOW, do they do background checks at the US Canadian border?

Down here at the mexican border they look at there passport and usually let them through with ease. Although they do have "random" searches and background checks.

When i was little crossing back into the US after eating dinner down in Mexico, i saw the customs agents search a guys car and found nothing.

As the agents still believed he was carrying contraband, they cut of his hubcaps and still nothing. I doubt they even paid for the damages since he was probably a Mexican Citizen.

They probably could have done the same to you so you should count your blessing smile

John Lennon wouldn't leave the U.S. because he was afraid he would be denied re-entry because of a marijuana conviction.

Lately i havent crossed much but you could walk across the border with pounds of heroin and pot and coke in a back pack smoking a joint drunk and they wouldn't stop you. They didnt even ask if you are US citizens when you cross back to the US. Shit how do you think my housekeeper kept coming back.

Border Security down here is very lax i would say. About once every two months we have a decent sized drug bust. They have let who knows how many AK-47's and other machine guns into Mexico to supply all the Big drug cartels with private armies Smile

Perhaps they have tightened up the border now with all the violence in Mexico i have not crossed in a long awhile.

Well the fun continues.

Went to the RCMP to get printed and fill out form I-192 so that the finger prints can go with it and form C-216 to get form blaa blaa. When form blaa blaa returns I can get my criminal record in print.

With that certified copy of official records I can now go to the town and courthouse where I got the DUI 22 years ago and the possession charge 28 years ago. There I will need to attain certified copies of plea indictment, sentence and conviction for each crime. If the court of arrest can't provide certified copies they must submit a letter of their own explaining why. I feel this might be necessary because my narcotic charge is supposed to be waived after Canada raised the age to 18 years old.

I have gotten my letter from my employer already stating my occupation, length of employment, frequency and reason for entering the United States. I still need 2 character references from upstanding citizens of my community.

When all this finally comes together I'm to go to a port of entry to get fingerprinted and submit a money order or certified cheque for 545.00 USD. (The RCMP constable at the desk in Edmonton said this is a money cow)

Then a review.......that takes up to 3 months.

I don't care. I need to comply. I consider entering the United States a privilege.

In El Paso you can walk about a mile west of the Durango St. Bridge along the railroad tracks and when you get to 3 large water drainage tunnels you can cross the river there and there is a bus stop and a small store. When you come back make sure there or no Border Patrols watching when you cross the river, if there is you can wait them out. Screw a bunch of passports!

The thing about Juarez right now is Yes there is a lot of violence, but the drug cartels hit men are pretty dam accurate and get who they want with minimal cross fire causalities but every now and then they happen. Razz
