I did a quick search on priceline for roundtrip tickets in coach from various US cities. From LAX, NYC, PHX and houston to Mexico City and its going to cost $500-650, per person.

For what countries are a passport required for travel by US citizens? Returning to the US from all of them by air requires a passport these days, though Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean can still be traveled to by land or sea without a passport (check with the company if taking a commercial cruise, though). Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, among other island areas, are US territories* and no passport is required for travel between them and the US

Passports and Western hemisphere travel are an issue because historically US citizens have been allowed to travel between Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, Bermuda and Panama bearing only US citizenship proof like an "official" birth certificate (embossed with state seal) and a government-issued id (like a driver's license); that's still the case for land travel by US citizens between Mexico, Canada and the US, but the new passport rules require a passport when returning to the US by air from Mexico and Canada and will eventually require a passport or passport substitute when traveling by land or sea. Not now, though.

Do I need a passport to travel to Mexico and Canada?

The answer is yes if traveling by air: you need a passport to return to the United States. The answer is no if crossing borders by land or sea. And then it gets whacky.

Recommendations made by the Department of Homeland Security's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative caused passport rules to change in 2007: travelers now need passports if returning to the US by air from Canada and Mexico. DHS will be requiring passports from US citizens crossing Mexican and Canadian borders by land or sea as of June 1, 2009, and will give 60 days notice before that requirement goes into effect. One of three things will happen before a legislated mandatory date of June 1, 2009 (issued by Congress in order to allow the Department of Homeland Security to make the change effectively and smoothly) arrives:

The PASS card passport substitute will become available --

US citizens were able to begin applying for a PASS card as of February 1, 2008

High-tech driver's licenses may be introduced for border crossing purposes

Teens under 19 may be allowed to continue crossing borders with only a birth certificate, as is currently possible

This thread should be locked immediately.

If one receives a PM requesting personal information, exchanges, sales,or anything similar, it should be reported to admin immediately and sender banned.

hey joe,,you lost me a little bit on this one.

why should we lock a thread that is discussing wanting to take a vacation to mexico,,i was just pointing out that a passport is required to fly.

the likelyhood of this vacation happening is very slim.

i appreciate your warning and your concern myself, nobody should be sending PM's to collect personal info, but what exactly is it that concerns you?

why would someone use PM's to attempt to collect private information? and for what?

it is not illegal to discuss taking a vacation. you really surprised me on this one.

the PM warning i totally understand,,but why should the thread be locked?

this forum is dedicated to fighting for our rights. we're not breaking any laws joe. hell matter of fact Im personally not doing anything on my PC i havent already been doing for almost a decade.

i do like how you think though,,,dont get me wrong!

Joe buddy.

I want to take a trip with my family.

I needed to know about passports. Friendly, and most of all the safest place;s to go.

Do you seriously think we would all hop on a plane and go to Mexico?

I think when a one week old member suggests personal meets it is highly inappropriate and a serious security issue.

A better idea that might save all some money would to use real name instead of handle....real address instead of fictional city, and, why not just throw home phone on there...(You know.....reservations needs it....)

PM comment was merely a reminder. It happens frequently on many sites, but no one ever says anything about it until much later....

i will gladly let your warning serve as THE WARNING for people to keep their information private from people they are not familiar with if they so choose.

i myself dont really have anything to hide,,but i do respect those who feel like they do ,,or just want to exercise caution and remain private.

Remember this is a public forum, LAW ENFORCEMENT posts here openly and I must deduce covertly as well. If you have anything incriminating to discuss here, you do so at your own risk and in full knowledge that the person(s) you are speaking to could be ANYBODY.

If there are coverts here, maybe we'll change a mind or heart about Cannabis.

Let the games begin...

Coverts.

That's a funny word.

"Covert operations in afghanistan has uncovered a shitload of rugs."

Sounds like a quote from BUSH.
