I come from a small midwestern town that goes after pot smokers and underage drinking like the Nazi's for Jews. I am fully aware and have witnessed the straight up lying of cops on the scene, in reports, and in court. To combat this I used to carry a tape recorder in the side of my door(before camera phones). I then had a Treo cell phone which would have allowed me to record the entire say traffic stop. My new phone can only do 30 sec clips and you have to look down and save it. I encountered a story on www.digg.com awile back about someone who had had enough of police officers lying to get him, that he someone put a small hidden camera and recorder in his car that he could activate if pulled over. Not too long after he was pulled over, and the 5 0's were up to the usuall deception, games, threats, and harassment. He got off the charges, won a harassment settlement, and had his 15 min of online fame.
My questions are:
What are you thoughts on recording whether audio or visual your encounters with police? Are there laws regarding this?
Have you encountered this?
Any ideas on rigging up a hidden camera like this guy did?
If you were to do this, do you have any recommendations on leading an officer into saying/doing something that would later get you off. Like any phrases that would result in subsequent charges being thrown out on whatever grounds? |

Audio and visual recordings are wonderful and I highly recommend them!!!
There are no laws against filming or recording cops. A recording can legally be made if one party knows the recording is taking place. I.E. You may have a recorder secreted in your pocket and record whoever you want without their knowledge! However you can't place a recorder in a room and then leave. This is illegal.

Yes and I did not like being recorded as an officer. I hated it because it forced me to behave.

Not my area of expertise but that type of info can easily be found on the internet or at your favorite spy shop! Lots of people are doing this by the way!

I do not recommend trying to lead an officer unless you are very knowledgeable and confident in your understanding of police tactics, law and psychology. I recommend trying to become free to leave as soon as possible and if the cops screwed up, the recordings are evidence.
Hope all this helps.

check your states laws on this, in pennsylvania you cant record someone with audio or vidio without them knowing it.
in carlise pa a few miles south of whare im at a guy recorded a traffic stop, he didnt tell the cop he was being recorded, the cop seen the recorder and took the guy to jail for a day, he is out on bail now waiting trial.
he was charged with illegal wiretaping a law that pennsylvania put in after 911 happened.
this is a felony in pennsylvania
here is the link to the story
