| I'm a first time grower and I am having a problem understanding sexing of the flowering plant. I understand the difference between male and female, but what I don't understand is that if you find a male budding, do you throw away the plant and start over or just prune the male growths from the rest of the plants? |

Well you do have some time to make a decision, your safe until the sacks burst. If the male is in with all your females and it pops then yes you have a major problem, assuming you don't want all your females impregnated.
It all depends on what you want to do. If you are growing a whole crop of plants, and don't care to have any seeds you would chop the whole plant down.
Now if you want to produce a few seeds you should remove the male plant and let it continue to grow. To produce seeds take some pollen from the male and put it onto a few area's on a female. This will allow you to have some seeds but not every bud will have seeds, just to one's you pollinated.
If you want to have a shitload of seeds, just leave the male to burst and pollinate most to all of the females.
I would suggest getting at least one book on growing cannabis, Personally I like Marijuana Horticulture by Jorge Cervantes. |

| Thanks for the great info. I am starting off with just one plant. So, I don't have too much to worry about at this point. I'll just make sure to prune the male sac looking things. I have done much research and hopefully I have come up with the perfect regimen for my hydroponic setup. I imagine only time will tell. Speaking of which. Any suggestions of nutrients to use? |

just friendly comment, you are growing one plant hydro, and you dont know what nuts to use, you dont prune a male you kill it. if you did research you would know male plants dont grow bud, just female plants do.
sorry no disrespect.

It's alright no disrespect felt. I haven't done alot of research of the plant itself. I was referring to nutrients to use, I spent 3 months designing the nutrient regimen to use for each transition. Basically alternating different nutrients every two weeks while flushing the system. You know, shit like that.
I thought I had an understanding of the males of the plant, but after Von, I am back where I started. Von, do you mean kill the entire plant and start over from scratch??? And I'm aware the it is the female plants the grow together to form buds not males. I was thinking I just had to remove the males from the nodes. Is this wrong??? |

Sorry to tell you ,you are wrong.the Male is evil in a sense,it will get you a buzz, but not nearly as good of A buzz that horny female, longing for fertilization will give you,if grown to full maturity, and properly dried, and cured. |

yes kill the males, the whole plant you dont prune the male balls, or keep one male only and keep it away from the female plant, if you want seeds leave the male with the female and you will have big fat buds full of seeds. check out this sight and it will show you the difference between male / female.

I thought that one plant could have male and female sections to it at different nodes |

stopthemadness, only a hermaphrodite plant will show male and female flowers. you dont want to keep those, wack them too. only a true female you keep and with no male plants around you can make some big fat buds without seeds.
use a magnifying glass to see the sex at the node. female=white pistle at node.

you should grow at least four to have a good chance at getting at least one good female. It is usually a 50/50 ratio male to female but some times more male and sometimes more female. So if you don't want to waste alot of time grow at least four but I would start with ten and hope to get four to five females.

| If no access to clones....and one only has space for a couple, fem stock always your best bet.....ie: Imagine one grows out and flowers 4 to find out 3 males........it happens.....a 5 pack of fems will cost nothing compared to results, time and expense saved..... |

Not true. I grew a plant that pollinated but there were still juicey buds on top but the rest were full of seeds one plant in one room. I think it was caslled a hermaphrodite |

Back in the 80's I remember locals "shocking" males as they termed it. There were people who I supposed forced males into hermaphrodites.
Is there some factual reason for doing this to plants other than inexperience? |
