| Anybody have an opinion on the religious defence for using sacramental herb? I claimed this defense as a teenager (tongue partly in cheek) while standing before a provincial judge charged with possessing mushrooms (I was busted while picking them from the grass in front of my high school; mushrooms had just become criminalized in BC months earlier). As you can imagine, he did not respond (did I detect a smile? a smirk? what was that?). |

xlldo, 'CANTHEISM' is based on cannabis as a mystical religion based on the inherent goodness of the cannabis plant, and should be reconized under the 1st Amendment and provide equal protection of the law under the 14th amendment. it has not stood up in the courts, the leos & judges dont want to reconize it as a religion.

Wow. Cantheism sounds pretty extreme. I like my sacramental wine, etc, too.
What's LEO? |

hey Brute 4291, 'CANTHEOLOGY'. the philosophical roots of 'CANTHEISM' and 'RASTAFARI' both have used cannabis sacramentally and ceremonially. Genesis 1:29-31, they are basicly the same.
Chris Conrad wrote a book on the subject.

| Leos, being what they are, historically have often hung out with the lions of religion and morality who dictate what substances shall be used and how, by whom, etc. All part of an effort to prevent people from having their own, unmediated spiritual experiences. Otherwise people tap into things that liberate their minds from the carefully crafted orthodoxy and propaganda surrounding them. Feed your head! |

Brute4291 what book?
Seems to me that every culture has, or has had, its drug of preference (or was that availability?) and that the users in each culture would have ascribed some sort of spiritual meaning to their chosen substance (even if only to get the moralists off their backs).
What I find striking is how Mexicans in the US and Chinese in Canada were brought in to work fields and build railways but as soon as they starting acquiring wealth and power and strong communities (albeit in the ghettos) their sacred stuff became prohibited with cannibis and opium laws. |
