I've had hundreds of contacts with the police. 80% or more were positive, many were way cooler than necessary, a few got me out of a jam when they could have really screwed me over. |

Had a dick of a cop light me up when I was in the left lane on my bicycle on my way home from work, I was there preparatory to entering a left-turn only lane to go to my street, and then he proceeded to ride alongside me and try to get me off the road. I indicated that I couldn't hear (had my hearing aid off when riding, I don't like shorting the hearing aid out with sweat), and he proceeded to scream at me and then drive off.
I got home and called the sheriff's dept and got ahold of the LT there and explained the situation. In his 18 years on the force, I was the first ever deaf person to contact him for any reason. He further explained to me that a lot of cops never even have contact with any deaf individuals in their entire careers.
Upshot of this, he found the offending deputy and made him go to remedial training on how to do a contact with deaf people (for lack of better wording).
This might be a unique incident in itself, but thought I'd share.

| I had a cop toss my bag and say, whatever, have a good one. This impressed me as a teenager. To this day I am convinced the RCMP are generally fair given the laws and the conditions they work under. |

Multiple times growing up in SoCal Ive been caught with small amounts and had it confiscated or dumped. I thanked them as I knew it could have been worse.
Ive also been profile stopped several times by Sheriffs and harassed a bit by them. As a teenager, I was caught out past curfew with a friend by the Sheriffs dept. They pulled guns on us and threatened to shoot my friends dog. I guess they were trying to "scare us a little".
Various little traffic infractions that Cops have given me a break.
Any other treatment I received, I asked for, good or bad.
Most have been professionals that I respect. A few, have been pure criminals. Some were shaking and sweating so bad from the expectation of a adrenaline fix that I actually look back and feel sort of sorry for them... Like I do a crackhead stealing shit off my porch. Yeah, the types Barry talk about. |

My question is: if a cop gets made to go to remedial training like that sheriff that got a new one reamed out for him... would he go and then just cop a few Z's in the class, or be made to interact?
There are some cops out there that are real discriminatory, and nothing will change their minds on the matter.

that didn't help you...
Helping you would have been giving you more pot, or protecting your current pot.
I wonder if we made a poll that said, "have cops actually helped you?" Not, not f***ing you over is not helping you, helping you is protecting you, or saving your cat from a tree or something. |

Good point! You point out that our view of being "helped" is synonymous with being free to leave. |

lets weigh the difference $20 of pot in the ditch OR 6 months in jail and 2 years probation. ALSO i want to add that the same trouper stopped me 2 weeks later and did THE SAME THING. but no ticket for 62 in a 45mph., his words were PLEASE SLOW DOWN ON THE WEED AND SPEED. and i drove off. that louisiana state trouper helped/ helped me stay out of JAIL TWICE. thanks soc.

hey penance, you are right about the NOPD. living in louisiana i go to new orleans every month to the doctor. and have been to many mardi- gras in N.Orleans and seen police be very very patient with all people on Burbon st. they want you to have a good time but if you fight, urinate in public, or a nusance they will bring you to a holding cell and let you go in the morning.
