I thought about this time while reading the thread FORMER TRUCKER but thought it should be a new topic.

I had just bought a used car. The registration was not current but I had paperwork in the car saying I had some time to get it right. It was just after night fall and I lit up. Right then I had red and blue in my rear view. I pinched out the J and just dropped it between my legs, not wanting to be seen reaching around while I was lit up. The seat in this heap had no padding left just springs and there was a lot of foam and other stuff under the seat. That is where I dropped the J.

When I got out of the car I had all the paper work in my hand to show I had just bought the car, I can't remember now, must be the smoke, but it was that day or the day before I had bought it.

The cop started to look inside the car using his flash light. I was standing right next to him being as friendly as possible, read non threatening. When his light was working the area that I knew the j was in I started looking for it also. I figured that because I knew it was there I would find it just before he did. When I saw it I turned and spoke to the officer. He stopped looking and turned to answer me never finding the j. In the stage magic world this is called misdirection.

When stopped be nice, don't argue, be as helpful as you can and misdirect them with one or two friendly questions. Use no more then one or two or you will alert them to what you are doing and maybe you will get away with it.

This is only one of the times I have done this sort of thing. I'm well into the last half of my life now and I started at age 16. Should have gone down a lot of times but this trick always worked for me. The real key is to be nice, non threatening, and helpful.

One of the lines that worked for me to misdirect was "Hey do you know that when I was in high school I was a police cadet." And that line is true. At that time everybody in the class sold dope except for one. Of course I was that one ( yea right ).

Nice story! Smile
I agree about misdirection. If you ask someone a question they are not expecting, you force them to internalize and they are not externalized, examining details.
The degree of internalization can be deepened if question or suggestion is more personally oriented. Subtlety is key. It would be easy to fumble this if you unfamiliar with this aspect of human thinking. You can actually see it happen in someones eyes. Give someone you know a unexpected compliment and watch the eyes. Notice the difference to when they are actively investigating or describing something.
Don't think of a pink elephant wearing your underwear.
Did you?

I misdirected an officer when he pulled me over by asking him politely but a little indignantly,if I had been speeding because I had my cruise control set and didnt think i was speeding. He didnt get the chance to think he smelled anything.(I knew I hadnt been speeding) I didnt know why I had been pulled over but I was holding a small amount, car reeked.
My license plate light(one of two) was out. I didnt act guilty of anything. Nor should I have felt guilty even though I felt scrutinized.

A good question would be "When is it to late to become an officer of the law, I've always had a dream of being one."

haha
