etymology of curse words and what makes them bad.
Swear words come from many different sources, and it's a shame that we don't talk about them more, because profanity is one of the most fascinating ways to learn about another culture. Most of our swear words do in fact come from Anglo-Saxon dialects, but some also come from French and Latin.
I try to keep it clean, but sometimes a good fuck! or shit! provides just the feeling I need. you smash your finger in the door and gosh darnit just doesnt help the pain. language nazis say anyone who swears doesn't have sufficient mastery of the language. I can tell you Thats Bullshit. I Love Language lol
most know the origin of the word fuck,,some say its for unlawful carnal knowledge,,you were found guilty got your stamp on your forehead and you died,
or some say fornication under consent of king posted on your door so you didnt die.
now shit,i dont think many know,,when the settlers came to this land they needed fertilizers to feed the crops,,well the ships were bringing over tons of manure in the hulls of the boat but for some reason they would get about half way here and BOOM the boats would explode and the shit sunk..well some genius finally realized what was happening with the gas and said hey,,get that shit out of the hull and put it on the deck,,so they put the fertilizer in large boxes on the deck and stamped it,,Ship High In Transit
Damn,,,originally the word was neither a "curse" word nor did it have theological significance. It was a perfectly good word with which to translate the Biblical Greek words "apollumi" "krino" and "apolleia".
But when theologians twisted this word out of its original meaning, it became a word which would smear the character of God... The world followed the church and used it as a "curse" word,, but you should know, that it was the church that turned it into its present meaning not unbelievers.
When preachers say that hordes of humanity are "damned to hell" they themselves are actually guilty of misrepresenting the Creators role as judge.
Pussy as a slang term for the female pudenda is thought to derive ultimately from Low German puse "vulva" or Old Norse puss "pocket, pouch". It didn't arise in English with a sexual meaning until the 19th century, but prior to that it had been used to refer to women in general (16th century). It has since also come to mean effeminate, feeble, or homosexual men or boys.
words usually become considered bad when they describe something that a culture either holds sacred or disturbing... It used to be that the really bad swear words in english all had to do with religion,,,
but as our english speaking world has become less and less religious over the years, words describing bodily functions have taken their place. like "piss on that shit - im outta here" usually when there is work to be done.
just what i think ,,who really knows |
