i hear people say all the time, " well we got freespeech."
well do we? really? you know the answer if your being honest with yourself,,just ask any school teacher how free their speech is,,ask any enlisted military serving active duty how free their speech is?
you see democracy ( or a representative republic,,you choose) cannot function fully and properly without freedom of speech, yet the lawmakers have all but muted public servants who do not have the right to freedom of speech. They try to disallow public servants from freely expressing a personal opinion... Also public servants are not allowed to publicly criticize the Public Service. Not without consequences anyway.
an individual should always have the right to speak according to his conscience... i also believe that any public servant has the moral right and responsibility to behave according to his conscience.
If his position and knowledge allow him to see risks or opportunities that he believes the public have a right to be made aware of, then he should do what he can to make them known,, and he should not be gagged in any way for doing so.
Hitler used freedom of speech to end freedom of speech and the democratic process to end democracy.
Of course, you can say what you want as long as you say it to yourself quietly while no one is around. Beyond that freedom of speech exists in degrees and not in simplistic black or white, you either have it or not, terms.
but the fact of the matter is we have freedom of limited speech!
